Lady Gaga’s manager: ‘She’s not provocative for the sake of being provocative’

Manager confirms the singer won't tone down stage show in wake of protests

Lady Gaga‘s manager has confirmed that the singer has no plans to tone down her stage show, even if it prevents her from performing in some countries on her world tour.

Gaga’s manager Troy Carter said today that she “plays the show as it is,” and that she is not “provocative for the sake of being provocative,” AP reports.

Earlier this month, the singer was refused a permit to perform in the Indonesian capital on June 3 after Islamic groups in the country expressed opposition to her “vulgar” style.

However, in a cryptic tweet this week, the singer suggested that the concert could now go ahead if she toned down her show, hinting that she would perform alone. She tweeted:

She then added: ” If the show does go on as scheduled, I will perform the BTWBall alone.”

Reuters previously reported that three Islamic groups had expressed their opposition to the concert planned on June 3, as part of her mammoth 110-date ‘Born This Way Ball’ world tour, and demanded that it be stopped.

“She’s a vulgar singer who wears only panties and a bra when she sings and she stated she is the envoy of the devil’s child and that she will spread satanic teaching,” said Salim Alatas, the Jakarta head of hardline Islamic Defenders Front (FPI). He added: “This is dangerous.”

While Indonesia is a secular state, it has the world’s largest population of Muslims as well as significant minorities of Christians, Buddhists and Hindus.

More than 30,000 tickets had been sold for the Jakarta concert.

Lady Gaga’s tour kicked off in controversy last month (April 27) after authorities in Seoul, South Korea implemented a strict adults only policy at her show, banning anyone under the age of 18 from attending her first tour date.

The age restriction was imposed after a ratings board deemed the performance unsuitable for children, following earlier protests from Christian groups claiming the singer was “obscene” and could “taint” young people.

Gaga is touring Europe as part of her Born This Way Ball tour and will now also play Manchester’s Evening News Arena on September 11 and a one-off date in Ireland at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium four days later. The Darkness will support on all dates.
