Paramore, Thirty Seconds To Mars and Eminem are among the other winners
Lady Gaga won three awards at the MTV EMA 2010 in Madrid last night (November 7), although she was not present at the ceremony.
The singer delivered her acceptance speeches live from a show in Budapest as she was awarded gongs for Best Pop, Best Female and Best Song for ‘Bad Romance’.
Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria hosted the ceremony and wore 13 different outfits during the night, including a huge leg of ham in homage to Gaga‘s infamous meat dress.
Shakira opened the show, performing ‘Loca’ with Dizzee Rascal running out halfway to join in with a rap. She then sung a raucous version of ‘Waca Waca’ before Longoria returned in a red dress, holding a football and hailing 2010 as “a fantastic year for Spain”. The football team won the World Cup for the first time in July.
Taylor Momsen presented the award for Best New Act to Kesha, after which Kings Of Leon ran through recent single ‘Radioactive’.
Much of the action took place simultaneously in a seperate location in front of 100,000 fans at Madrid‘s Alcala Gate, where Katy Perry performed ‘Fireworks’ and Linkin Park ran through ‘Waiting To The End’.
Other performers included Kid Rock, who treated the crowd to a fire-and-brimstone rendition of ‘Born Free’ and Rihanna, who performed ‘(Only Girl) In The World’ wearing a white dress half made of huge flowers and a crown while men in suits and bowler hats danced behind her.
Johnny Knoxville presented the award for Best Alternative to Paramore, with frontwoman Hayley Williams handing the band’s award to bassist Jeremy Davis and telling him “You hold it, you’ve got big muscles!” before adding, “We’ve never won an award on TV before. I hope my mum sees this.”
Slash presented the award for Best Live Act, dressed in a T-shirt with the Coca-Cola logo replaced with the word cunt.
“There’s nothing better than watching a good live performance, especially when it involves two girls and whipping cream,” he suggested before giving the award to Linkin Park, who were also at the Madrid city stage rather than the main venue.
30 Seconds To Mars presented the Free Your Mind award to Shakira for her philanthropic activities, with the singer explaining thar “music can make you dance and laugh but can always make you think” before Plan B took to the stage, after which B.o.B. and Hayley Williams returned for their hit ‘Aeroplanes’ and Kesha turned the venue neon for a tribal version of ‘Tik Tok’.
Miley Cyrus presented the award for Best Rock to 30 Seconds To Mars before Longoria returned dressed as a leg of ham, joking that Lady Gaga had left it behind. Gaga was then awarded Best Female which was presented by Dizzee Rascal who declared: “It’s a shame it’s been more difficult for women to make it in the music industry than men, which is odd because women inspire so much music.”
The Jackass crew returned to present the award for Best Song, again to the absent Lady Gaga. Cameras returned to her Budapest gig where she held her three statues and performed an impromptu few lines backed by her electric guitarist.
