Electro-pop partisans storm Nottingham's Polish Eagle Club
Late Of The Pier celebrated the end of their tour and the impending completion of their debut album with a special show at a unique venue in Nottingham tonight (March 13).
The gig took place at the Polish Eagle Club, a dancehall-decked with chandeliers and ornate coats of arms that is normally reserved for Polish Catholic weddings.
The band’s fans, friends and family united for a rapturously received performance that culminated in stage invasions, kit destruction and band members Potter and Sam crowd-surfing.
Between songs, Potter offered sermon-like advice to the crowd, commanding them to “Be friends, come together and dance”, unveiling his own eccentric trademark dance moves. His erratic stage performance continued when he threw the bed-slats used as percussion on current single ‘The Bears Are Coming’ into the crowd, who tore them apart in a frenzy.
During ‘Vw’ one drunk fan climbed his way onto the stage and fell backwards into the drum kit before being removed, motivating a throng of young female fans to follow suit with their own, less destructive invasion.
The unusual venue, which has only ever hosted one gig before in its history, also attracted a selection of bemused Polish regulars who seemed to enjoy the band’s avante-garde pop, dancing with vigour as the idiosyncratic four-piece performed former single ‘Bathroom Gurgle’.
Speaking after the show, bassist Faley told NME.COM it was a good chance to, “try some new things from our album out. Anything could have happened on that stage tonight, but with our hometown crowd it was just one big party.”
Earlier in the day, the band met with fans at Forest Fields recreation grounds for a game of five aside football.
The night’s celebrations continued after the gig at the band’s after-party at The Bodega Social Club, where they DJed under their alias CP. ZARCORP, along with Liars Club DJs.
The band are now due to return to the studio to put the finishing touches to their as-yet untitled debut album, which is being produced by Erol Alkan.
