Singer-songwriter speaks about recording with Ryan Adams producer
Laura Marling says her second album will not be “medieval”, despite previously hinting she was considering a bit of musical time travel.
The singer had previously suggested she would take the unexpected direction the follow-up to 2008’s ‘Alas, I Cannot Swim’ she has just recorded with Ryan Adams‘ producer Ethan Johns.
“Gosh, I shot myself in the foot saying that,” Marling admitted to BBC 6Music.
“I was doing a play-through of the songs to Ethan, who just produced my album, and we suddenly went on a mad brainstorm and decided that ‘medieval’ was definitely the direction we should be going in. Thankfully we came to our senses.”
Marling praised Johns, declaring that recording the album – due next year – with him was like working with “a hero”.
“He produced a lot of albums I was head over heels in love with, so it was quite a step to meet a hero like that, but of course he fulfilled every expectation and he was a wonderful chap, ” she said. “I think we’ve worked really well together. He’s very, very clever and an incredible musician, so that’s been exciting.”
