Lily Allen reveals her ‘Desert Island Discs’ selections

Radio 4 castaway's choices include The Stone Roses, Pulp and The Streets

Lily Allen has revealed her selection of eight favourite songs for Desert Island Discs, after guesting yesterday (June 29) on the long-running Radio 4 show.

Allen chose songs by The Stone Roses, Pulp and Etta James. She was the first castaway to pick tracks by The Streets, Irish rockers Sultans Of Ping FC, Louisiana blues musician Tommy McLain and dancehall producer General Degree. Asked to pick one song to save, Allen chose The Stone Roses’ ‘I Am The Resurrection’. Allen’s chosen book was ‘Auntie Mame’ by Patrick Dennis, while her luxury would be her husband Sam Cooper’s shirt with her daughter’s handmade rabbit sewn onto it.

During the show, Allen explained why her music is so personal. “The only thing I can do really is write lyrics,” she said. “The only way I know how to do that is by being honest and doing it with integrity, because otherwise there’s no point.”

Pulp – ‘Common People’
Sultans Of Ping FC – ‘Where’s Me Jumper?’
The Stone Roses – ‘I Am The Resurrection’
The Streets – ‘Blinded By The Lights’
Gerry Rafferty – ‘Right Down The Line’
Etta James – ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’
General Degree – ‘Traffic Blocking’
Tommy McLain – ‘Before I Grow Too Old’
