Singer reveals cover of Keane's 'Somewhere Only We Know' was not financially beneficial to her
Lily Allen has said that she made around £8,000 from her cover of Keane’s ‘Somewhere Only We Know,’ which was used in John Lewis’ Christmas TV advertising campaign.
The single went to Number One as the advert was played repeatedly over the festive period. However, despite what appeared to be a success for Allen, she has revealed that it did not benefit her financially as much as she had expected.
Asked how much she made from the single by Beat, Allen, who will release new album ‘Sheezus’ later this year, replied: “Nothing. Everyone assumes I made millions from the John Lewis ad – I probably made £8k.”
She then went on to say how earning less money has meant her promotional schedule has been scaled back.
She revealed: “Now I’m not earning much from the music. I won’t do as much promo for the record company. It’s changed in that sense. I have to look at other ways. Back then it was about doing as much press as possible, but now one quote will spread everywhere.”
Allen recently backtracked on a number of comments she made about feminism in a recent interview and criticised the music industry for being “sneering” towards women.
The singer said in a recent interview that she does not think feminism should be an issue in 2014, stating that “everyone is equal” in the modern world.
However, Allen then hit back at the way she was portrayed, saying in a different interview: “Of course I’m a feminist.” Speaking more widely on the subject, Allen maintains that she is surprised gender equality has not yet been reached and says she has no regrets speaking out on the subject.
Earlier this year Allen expressed worry that Kanye West might react negatively to her referencing his 2013 album ‘Yeezus’ with her new album title. The singer, who won Best Solo Artist at last week’s NME Awards With Austin, Texas, named her third album as an homage to the rapper.
