Lily Allen battles Ellie Goulding and Avicii for Number One spot

The midweek chart update also reveals One Direction are set for a third week on top of the Official Album Chart

Lily Allen‘s reign at the top of the Official Singles Chart with ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ could come to an end this weekend with Ellie Goulding and Avicii challenging the singer for the Number One position.

Official Chart Company data reveals that Allen’s cover of the Keane track is still at Number One at the midweek stage, but that Avicii’s ‘Hey Brother’ and ‘How Long Will I Love You’ by Ellie Goulding are both close behind at Number Two and Three respectively. The final chart will be revealed on BBC Radio 1 this Sunday (December 15).

Justin Bieber has scored this week’s highest new entry so far with his ‘Celebration’ collaboration with Chance The Rapper new at Number 17. If the track continues selling well going into the weekend, it will be Bieber’s tenth Top 40 single in as many weeks.

However, Susan Boyle’s much-hyped posthumous duet with Elvis Presley, ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’, has only entered the Singles Chart at Number 40. This makes Presley’s chances of scoring a second Christmas Number One 51 years after he first topped the festive chart with ‘Return To Sender’ seem unlikely.

The 2013 Christmas Number One race officially kicks off on Sunday (December 15) with this year’s winner being revealed on BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart Show with Scott Mills and Jameela Jamil on December 22.

Meanwhile, in the Official Singles Chart, One Direction look likely to stay at Number One for a third straight week with their latest album ‘Midnight Memories’. This week’s only new entry on the chart comes from Neil Young with his album ‘Live At The Cellar Door’ new at 40.
