Live Nation apologise after Shakira’s tour merchandise appears to include Nazi imagery

The singer is currently on her El Dorado World Tour

Live Nation have apologised after an item of Shakira‘s tour merchandise appeared to include Nazi imagery.

The singer is currently in the middle of her El Dorado world tour, with dates in Europe and North American coming up on her schedule.

A gold-coloured necklace shown on Shakira’s website featured what looked like a sun design, but, some fans pointed out, also bore resemblance to a “black sun” or “sunwheel” Nazi emblem that contains hidden swastikas. It was priced at $9.95 (£7.50), but has since been removed from sale.

“So Shakira most likely accidentally put a nazi symbol on her tour merch and didn’t know it lmao,” wrote one Twitter user.

In a statement shared on Twitter, a representative for Live Nation wrote: “The necklace Live Nation designed for Shakira’s El Dorado World Tour was based on Pre-Columbian imagery.

“However, some fans have expressed concern that the design bears an unintentional resemblance to Neo-Nazi imagery. We sincerely apologise for this inadvertent similarity and have permanently pulled the item from the tour collection.”

Earlier this month, the Colombian pop star played her first UK show since 2010. She appeared apt The O2 in London on June 11 to promote her latest album, ‘El Dorado’. The record was released in May 2017 and reached Number One in iTunes in 37 countries.
