Pop icon blamed fall on cape being 'tied too tight'
The music world has reacted with a mixture of surprise, sympathy and humour to Madonna’s fall during her Brit Awards performance.
Closing out the show at the awards ceremony at The O2 in London last night (February 25), the singer was performing her new single ‘Living For Love’ when she took a fall from the stage down a flight of stairs.
As part of her routine Madonna stood on top of a platform on stage and attempted to untie the floor-length cape she was wearing. Backing dancers attempted to remove the garment, instead dragging her backwards down three steps. Madonna was forced to stop singing as the panicked dancers helped her stand up. After a few seconds of recovery, she went on to complete her performance.
The pop icon later took to Instagram to explain the fall. “My beautiful cape was tied too tight! But nothing can stop me and love really lifted me up! Thanks for your good wishes! I’m fine!” she wrote.
Meanwhile, musicians including Peace’s Harry Koisser, Run The Jewels’ El-P, Giggs, and Ghostpoet reacted to the incident on Twitter. See a collection of their responses below.
Madonna was performing at the Brits for the first time in 20 years. The evening also saw live performances from acts including Royal Blood, Sam Smith and George Ezra.
