Singer complains she couldn't hear herself singing before being joined by family on stage
Mariah Carey suffered an embarrassing technical failure during a New Year’s Eve performance in Australia.
Sound issues meant she couldn’t hear herself sing through her earpiece monitor, and after barking a few instructions at the crew, spent three minutes ad-libbing lyrics on stage.
She sang: “These might not be the best lyrics I ever wrote, but whatcha gonna do? I’m in a dress that’s a little bit small and little bit big and my shoes my shoes my shoes…”
The ‘Hero’ singer’s performance was preceded by numerous warm-up acts, and eventually opened her set with ‘Can’t Take That Away’ from her 1999 ‘Rainbow’ album.
As the audio problems kicked in, she was heard complaining to engineers that the sound in her earpiece was distorted and said: “There’s like 200 of you, can one of you just fix the ear thing? I hope I’m not asking for the moon and the stars … there’s a lot of sound problems going on here. I don’t know if it’s me or you, or something in the air, but can we fix it?”
Carey also disappeared between songs for “rest breaks” and, according to News.com.au, was continually out of breath throughout the performance.
Carey was later joined on stage by husband Nick Cannon and her twin babies Moroccan and Monroe after she had announced some “special visitors”. She’s also recently been announced as a judge on American Idol, a role that comes with an $18 million pay packet. The series begins on January 16.
