The second annual Orion Music + More event will take place in Detroit in June of next year

Metallica are set to host their own festival next summer.

This will be the second annual Orion Music + More event, after the metal band put on the inaugural festival in Atlantic City in New Jersey back in June of this year.

Next year’s Orion Music +More festival will take place in Detroit on June 8 and 9, 2013. More details on the exact location and line-up will be revealed in February of next year.

This past summer’s event saw Metallica headlining both nights of the festival, performing 1984’s ‘Ride The Lightning’ and 1991’s ‘Metallica’ in full. Other bands on the bill included Arctic Monkeys, Best Coast and Modest Mouse.

Before the event, Lars Ulrich of the band spoke to Rolling Stone about the idea behind the festival.

He said: “I don’t walk around and think they’re all Metallica fans, I think they’re all festival fans, music fans, people out for the experience. I hope our fans are going to be open and supportive of everybody that’s here, and if they’re not, I’m going to find them and kick their ass.”

Metallica are currently working on a new album. They plan to release the follow-up to their last album ‘Death Magnetic’ in 2014. Ulrich recently gave Metal Hammer the lowdown on what to expect.

He said: “The stuff that we were banging out yesterday, it felt heavy, it felt energetic, it was loud, it was fast, it was rocking, it was crazy… The snare drum was on there and there were guitar solos, in case anybody was wondering.”
