Andy Copping says Def Leppard are worthy headliners
Download Festival‘s organiser Andy Copping has said he decided not to book Metallica for this year’s festival because they have toured the UK too frequently.
Copping was addressing fan criticism of his decision to book Def Leppard as the festival’s final headliner this June.
Speaking to RockAAA, the organiser said of his decision: “I booked Def Leppard because they deserve it, because they are big enough to do it.”
Asked why he hadn’t pursued Metallica, Copping responded by saying: “Metallica are a great band but if they went away for three or four years then came back then they’d be even bigger. When they keep coming back they become boring.”
Copping added: “Metallica have toured extensively and have been here for seven of the last eight summers. For me that is definitely overdoing it.”
Copping also ruled out Rammstein, Tool and Soundgarden making appearances at the festival.
Download Festival takes place between June 10 and 12 at Donington Park. It is headlined by Def Leppard, System Of A Down and Linkin Park.
