Metallica: ‘We’d love to come back and headline Glastonbury again’

Organiser Michael Eavis says US rockers played 'like their lives depended on it'

Metallica have said that they would “love” to come back and headline Glastonbury Festival again.

The group last night (June 28) became the first metal band to top the bill on the Pyramid Stage in the festival’s 44-year history, with a set that brought a flag-waving army of fans onstage and began with a video skit referencing the controversy around their performance. Read the full report here.

Speaking to the BBC after their set, drummer Lars Ulrich described the experience as “otherworldly”, saying: “That was sensational. I don’t remember much of it… the energy was fantastic.”

“We have one shot, you never know if you’ll be invited back,” he said. “I want to soak up every second of this thing. We would love to come back.”

Addressing the crowd during their set last night, frontman James Hetfield told the crowd: “We’re very proud to be here and represent the heavier side of music.”

Michael Eavis was this morning effusive in his praise for the metal band. “They put so much into it, like their lives depended on it,” said the Glastonbury organiser. “They were so keen to do it, they always wanted to play and they just delivered a show. People loved it.”

Asked if he thought the risk of the controversial booking paid off, Eavis said: “I promised them a chance to come about 20 years ago, so the time was now. We gave them a slot this time for the first time and I think they filled it very, very well – extremely well. I think we were very lucky to have them, actually.”

The final day of the festival will see a headline slot from Kasabian on the Pyramid Stage, Massive Attack on the Other Stage, Disclosure on the West Holts Stage and James Blake on the Park Stage. Keep up to date with all the latest action throughout the day on NME.com.
