Metallica’s Kirk Hammett: ‘We have to start working on the album’

The guitarist said he'd be 'up for' releasing their new record in 2015

Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett has said that the band “have to” start working on their next album.

The metal giants released their last album, ‘Death Magnetic’, in 2008, while their collaboration with the late Lou Reed, ‘Lulu’ was released in 2011. They’ve also toured and played festivals extensively in the past five years, including a slot at last month’s Grammy Awards, when they teamed up with classical pianist Lang Lang to perform their track ‘One’.

Hammett confirmed that they will start working on the record this year in a new interview with Kerrang. “We cannot think of any other reasons to procrastinate,” he told the magazine. “We’re kind of backed up into the corner now, so yes, we have to start working on the album. And I’m excited. James has, like, 800 riffs. I only have 400, but there’s not going to be any shortage of ideas. It’s going to be interesting to see how it turns out.”

He added that the band don’t have any songs for the record yet. “We have little bits and pieces of music earmarked to become songs, and really that’s all I can say about it. We’re pretty psyched about it. We’re only procrastinating because we love being at home with our families, but we really do love writing songs together and making an album.”

When asked if the record would likely be released in 2015, Hammett said: “I’m fucking up for it, man”.
