Epic Records chairman says he has plans for a future release featuring vocals from pair
Jackson’s posthumous release ‘Xscape’ was released on Monday (May 12) and looks set to go straight to Number One in the UK. The album includes eight unreleased songs worked on by contemporary artists and producers, including Timbaland and Stargate.
The album is the project of executive producer LA Reid, who was granted unlimited access to four decades’ worth of Jackson’s vocal material, and also signed Justin Bieber in 2009. Speaking to Access Hollywood (via Billboard) about his plans for more material from the vaults, Reid confirmed there are plans for something “really special” with the singers.
“I signed Justin, so I feel a loyalty. I feel like I should protect him. That’s my relationship with him,” said Reid. Referencing a song which leaked online in 2013 featuring vocals from both Bieber and Jackson before being promptly removed, he continued: “‘Slave 2 The Rhythm’ didn’t include him per my direction. If it hadn’t been leaked, it would have been featured, but it sort of took the wrong turn. But you know what? We’re gonna revisit that and do something really special with Justin Bieber and Michael.”
A version of ‘Slave 2 The Rhythm’ minus Bieber appears on ‘Xscape’.
Jackson’s closest competition in the Official UK Album Charts this week comes from The Black Keys. Speaking about the release of a new album from the King Of Pop, Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney said: “[It’s] some fucking bullshit that sucks so bad that it took them three years after he died to make it listenable.”
