R&B singer opens up about the competition he feels with fellow US star
The US based singer, who recently released new album ‘Wildheart’, has distanced himself from the artists to which he is most often compared and described his relationship with Ocean as “cordial” at best.
Speaking to The Sunday Times, Miguel said: “I wouldn’t say we were friends. To be completely honest — and no disrespect to anyone — I genuinely believe that I make better music, all the way around.”
Asked about the comparisons he and his music receive to that made by Ocean and The Weeknd, Miguel suggests he will last longer in the industry. “It’s interesting,” he said, “but we’ll see who’s in it for the long haul. It’s like a marathon, you know?”
Elsewhere in the interview Miguel touches on the incident at the 2013 Billboard Awards when a leap across the stage saw him accidentally land on an audience member’s head.
“I was devastated,” he explained. “It was almost like mocking me. I’m a Scorpio, and we don’t really do well with embarrassment. It just reminds me that I’m not afraid to fail. You just have to take the leap of faith. Yeah, they’re gonna call you crazy. But nothing was ever achieved without being a little delusional.”
During the 2013 awards ceremony, the singer jumped between two parts of the stage mid-performance. Fans were stood in between the two platforms and Miguel landed short of the other side, and on two female audience members’ heads.
One of the women is taking legal action against Miguel and the MGM Grand – the venue where the ceremony took place. Miguel practised his botched stagedive twice in rehearsal, according to the singer’s representative at the time.
Miguel, meanwhile, will play three UK dates in support of new album ‘Wildheart’ this October. The US R&B singer will perform in London, Manchester and Birmingham later this year.
Starting in London on October 13, the ‘Wildheart’ tour will see Miguel play at O2 Academy Brixton before gigs at Manchester Academy and Birmingham Academy.
