Miley Cyrus lights ‘joint’ on stage, Eminem wins Global Icon award at MTV EMAs

'Wrecking Ball' singer smokes while accepting Best Video award

Miley Cyrus appeared to smoke a joint on stage at the MTV EMAs in Amsterdam last night (November 10).

Walking on stage at the Ziggo Arena, Amsterdam to accept the award for Best Video, which she won for the controversial ‘Wrecking Ball’, she stopped to light a hand-rolled cigarette. Cannabis is not legal in the Netherlands, but users can’t be prosecuted for possession of small amounts, while it can be sold legally in coffee shops. Collecting the award, she walked on stage carrying a handbag and said: “I couldn’t fit the award in my purse but I did find this,” as she took the joint and lighter from her purse and sparked up. She had previously opened the show singing ‘We Can’t Stop’ while wearing a spandex suit – in keeping with the space theme of this year’s awards – and twerked with a dwarf during the routine.

Cyrus, the recipient of several ‘open letters’ regarding her behavior since last twerking at an awards ceremony, had appeared on the red carpet prior to the ceremony starting wearing a dress picturing murdered rapper Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G emblazoned with the slogan ‘Please stop violence’.

Elsewhere at the awards, Eminem was the biggest winner on the night, picking two awards – Global Icon and Best Hip Hop Act.
