'Achy Breaky Heart' singer talks about his daughter's MTV VMA performance
Billy Ray Cyrus has defended his daughter Miley Cyrus‘ performance at last month’s MTV VMA Awards.
Cyrus caused controversey by dancing provocatively – or twerking – with Robin Thicke, a foam finger and giant teddy bears. The performance drew a lot of criticism for the singer with many saying she had gone too far.
Now her father, famous for his one-hit wonder ‘Achy Breaky Heart’, has stepped into the debate and has backed his daughter’s decision to perform the risqué dance moves at the awards bash.
He told Access Hollywood: “She’s a very smart young lady. She wanted to shake things up a little bit and mission accomplished. She [did] a great deal of preparation and financial investment. All those bears and things she was going out of pocket for to make that stage great. She said she wanted people to be talking.”
Despite defending his daughter’s performance, Cyrus did admit that he is finding it difficult to adjust to her more grown up image. “She wanted to go from a teenage superstar to a young lady, she’s got a lot to say musically,” he said. “It’s hard for me at times, it’s still Miley. It’s still my little girl, it’s still my daughter.”
