Mogwai’s movie ‘Burning’ to premiere at Glasgow Film Festival – video

Plus Stuart Braithwaite reveals band are working on new material

Mogwai‘s new live film ‘Burning’ is to premiere at Glasgow Film Festival on February 28, it has been revealed.

The movie, directed by Vincent Moon and Nataniel La Souanec, features footage of the band from their three Music Hall Of Williamsburg gigs in Brooklyn last April.

It will premiere at the GFT Glasgow venue. The film will be introduced by its directors, and followed by a Mogwai DJ set at a so-far secret location. A version of ‘Batcat’, taken from the film, is currently being streamed on Myspcace.com/mogwai.

Speaking of the release, frontman Stuart Braithwaite told NME.COM that it wasn’t the first time the band have attempted to record a live DVD.

“We actually tried to do something like this before, in Japan on the ‘Mr Beast’ tour (in 2006),” he explained. “We flew out all the recording equipment and set it up for the show, only to find out afterwards that one of the guitar mics wasn’t plugged in! So we had, like, four fifths of Mogwai on it. I remember hearing it and thinking, ‘My guitar sounds terrible there, why’s it so bad?!’ and then someone came in and told me the sound was actually coming through the vocal mic because no one had mic’d the guitar up!”

Recording ‘Burning’ was far easier according to Braithwaite, not least because of director Moon, whom the frontman was full of praise for.

“He’s a really good guy and I think he really gets what we’re all about. He’s an eccentric guy, but he’s really hard working and he’s got an amazing outlook,” he said, adding: “It’s not a traditional music film…there’s a few abstract things of us walking around New York and a few little montages. There’s no speaking in it at all, either.”

Braithwaite went on to reveal that Mogwai are currently starting work on new material, saying: “We’ve just started to write some new songs. We’re gonna record late summer and try and have a record out early next year.”

He continued: “We don’t all live in Scotland now, so we can of do things on our own and then later on – probably in the spring – we’ll all get together…and give each other a hard time about our new music!”

He also said that the band are not planning to play live again until the new album is recorded. “Every time we do the odd gig it kind of drags everything else on,” he said, “so we’re gonna concentrate on the new record.”

Songs featured in ‘Burning’, which will be released fully in the spring, are:

‘I’m Jim Morrison, I’m Dead’
‘Hunted By A Freak’
‘Like Herod’
‘New Paths To Helicon Pt1’

An accompanying live album (released as a box set, and on CD and vinyl) is also coming out alongside the DVD, called ‘Special Moves’. The box set release includes setlists, a DVD of ‘Burning’ and a poster. Aidan Moffat has designed the artwork for the release.
