Mogwai unreleased track surfaces on EP; band complete new album for spring 1999 release...
Mogwai, who play with Bonnie Prince Billy and Clinicat the NME Premier Awards London WC2 Astoria gigs on January 23, have a previously unreleased track called ‘I Can’t Remember’ included on a limited-edition EP released next week (December 7) by Glasgow’s Guided Missile records. There are three other bands bands on the EP (EL HOMBRE TRAJEDO, THE KARELIA and THE YUMMY FUR) and it’s an edition of 2500 on double 7-inch vinyl. The Mogwai track was recorded over a year ago.
Mogwai have been recording with DAVE FRIDMAN (MERCURY REV‘s producer and occasional member) in Buffalo, upstate New York, on their new album set for release in spring next year, provisionally entitled ‘Come On Die Young’. One scource close to NME who has heard some of the new material, described it as “downbeat” and “surprisingly depressing”.
(Come On Die Young is a Scottish street-gang slogan, often written as the accronym CODY on walls eg ‘Tongs Ya Bas CODY’; Young Team, as in ‘Mogwai Young Team’ is also a Scottish gang term for the junior section of street gangs eg Tongs Young Team).
Mogwai have no plans to play live in the immediate future, though there is a strong possibility that they will tour in April.
