DYNAMITE BRINGS HIT ‘BACK TO LIFE’

The Mercury Music Prize winner explains to NME.COM why she picked Soul II Soul...

MS DYNAMITE took the opportunity of winning the MERCURY MUSIC PRIZEto reveal her contribution to the NME WAR CHILD album, ‘1 LOVE’.

Speaking after her triumph at last week’s awards ceremony, she said: “I’ve chosen to do ‘Back To Life’ by Soul II Soul just because I love it. It’s, like, one of my all time favourites and the album’s given me the opportunity to record it so… that’s great. Also because I was looking up and down the list and it was mad trying to choose which Number One we were going to do. I just really wanted to do something that was British. My heart just said to me ‘I want to do something British’ – and that’s what I came up with.”

Asked about her own memories of the single, which was Number One in June 1989 when she was just nine years old, Ms Dynamite told NME.COM: “I remember I was quite young and it was the summer. It really reminds me of the summer. But I’ve never met the original Soul II Soul line-up.”
