Mumford & Sons enlist The Vaccines, Vampire Weekend to help them close Glastonbury 2013

Band bring curtain down on this year's festival with debut headline set

Mumford and Sons tonight (June 30) brought Glastonbury 2013 to a close with their debut headline set on the Pyramid Stage.

The band took to the stage at 9.45pm to a crowd that was dense, but notably smaller than that for The Rolling Stones last night. Beginning with ‘Lovers Eyes’, Marcus Mumford then told the crowd, “We came for a party,” before playing ‘I Will Wait’.

The stage production for the most part was muted, the big screens largely showing monochrome images, but lights and lasers projected from the stage. Early on, the band launched into a big-hitting run of tracks including ‘Whispers In The Dark’, ‘Winter Winds’ and ‘White Blank Page’. “Thank you very much Glastonbury,” said keyboard player Ben Lovett after the latter. “Have you had a good weekend? Yeah, it’s been alright, pretty alright,” he said, before thanking festival organiser Michael Eavis. He then said, “Here’s a quiet one,” before the band played the low-key ‘Timshel’. ‘Little Lion Man’ followed, introduced by Marcus Mumford, who said, “Shall we have a dance together, Glastonbury?”

‘Thistle And Weeds’ started a less barnstorming portion of the set including ‘Ghosts That We Knew’, ‘Hopeless Wanderer’ and ‘Holland Road’. After that, Lovett decided to mention last night’s superstar headliners. “So we’ve been a band for coming on six years, The Rolling Stones have been together for a lot longer than that,” he said. “The big difference between them and us is we’ve played Glastonbury four times.”

Marcus Mumford, dressed in a white shirt and tie, added: “Also, Ted’s fucking alive isn’t he!” to whoops from the crowd. Bassist Ted Dwane recently underwent surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain, and tonight wore a wide-brimmed hat to conceal the scar. After ‘Roll Away Your Stone’, Mumford asked the crowd to sing with him to “celebrate the fact that Ted is still here,” then the band played ‘Awake My Soul’. Mumford took to the drumkit for a dramatic ‘Dust Bowl Dance’, after which the band left the stage.

They returned to play ‘Babel’, the title track from the band’s 2012’s second album, and hit single ‘The Cave’. Mumford then announced that they were to bring out some friends to close out the festival, and introduced The Vaccines and Vampire Weekend. First Aid Kit and The Staves also appeared on stage, but were not announced at that point. Having said they selected the perfect song for the occasion, they then played a cover of Joe Cocker’s arrangement of The Beatles’ ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’, during which the Pyramid Stage Phoenix came alive and produced plumes of flame.
