'The Gay Nineties Old Tyme Music: Daisy Bell' is being released by painter Mark Ryden
Nick Cave, Katy Perry, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and Tyler, The Creator are amongst the musicians to feature on a limited edition concept album by painter Mark Ryden.
‘The Gay Nineties Old Tyme Music: Daisy Bell’ sees a host of artists performing their own versions of the traditional song, ‘Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two)’, which was written in 1892. Other musicians to take part include Weird Al Yankovic and Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo, writes the Hollywood Reporter. Last year Ryden painted an alternative cover for the deluxe version of Tyler, The Creator‘s ‘Wolf’ album, pictured. Ryden also created the artwork for Michael Jackson‘s ‘Dangerous’ as well as Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ ‘One Hot Minute’ and Aerosmith’s ‘Love in an Elevator’.
The album is being released in conjunction with Ryden’s new show The Gay 90s, which opened yesterday (May 3) at Los Angeles’ Kohn Gallery. The exhibition includes a painting of Katy Perry, entitled Katy Aphrodite. Only 999 copies of the album, which is on 180g red vinyl, are available. All of the copies have been hand-numbered and signed by Ryden. Half of them will be sold at the show opening and the other half on Ryden’s website from May 13. The album costs $99.99 and proceeds will go to Little Kids Rock, which supports musical education in disadvantaged schools.
Speaking about working with Perry, Ryden said: “The first time I actually heard of who she was, my 11-year-old niece said, ‘There’s this girl who really likes you’. I guess she had mentioned me in some interviews. I just got to meet her, and we were admirers of each other, and I asked her, and she did it.”
