Rapper "irked" by people claiming she's followed in 'Born This Way' singer's footsteps
Both artists have developed a reputation for embracing theatrics and outlandish outfits but, in an interview with ABC’s Nightline, the ‘Superbass’ rapper said she was “irked” by the constant similarities drawn between her and the ‘Born This Way’ star.
First of all, I’m a rapper. I’m from south Jamaica, Queens. What are the similarities?… Wigs? Every female in this game wears wigs. Over the top costumes? Eh, try again. It’s getting tired now, though, to me.
She went on to add: “In the beginning I was like, ‘OK, it’s cool, when they get to know me they’ll understand me.’ Gaga is a fantastic artist. She’s paved her way. She’s opened her own lane. But I feel like I have my own lane. And we never cross, ever!”
Minaj’s second studio LP, ‘Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded’, scored her the first UK Number One of her career in the Official UK Album Chart last weekend (April 8). The record features collaborations with the likes of Nas, Drake and Lil Wayne, as well as Chris Brown, and also includes the singles ‘Starships’ and ‘Stupid Hoe’ as well as future release ‘Right By My Side’.
Last month, Nicki Minaj announced a short UK tour for this June. The tour begins with two shows at London’s HMV Hammersmith Apollo on June 24 and 25, before moving onto Birmingham’s NIA Academy on June 26. Minaj wraps up the tour on June 28 with a show at Manchester’s O2 Apollo.
