Nicole Scherzinger nearly turned down ‘Dirty Dancing’ role because she’s anti-abortion

'I just want to encourage everybody to keep your babies'

Nicole Scherzinger has revealed that she nearly turned down her role in the upcoming TV adaptation of classic movie ‘Dirty Dancing’ because she is anti-abortion.

The former Pussycat Dolls turned solo star and X Factor judge is set to play the character of Penny in ABC’s remake of the ’80s cult film – who opts for an illegal abortion after she accidentally fell pregnant.

“I was like a crazy thing because, my family, my papa’s a bishop and my family’s really hardcore against abortion,” she told The Daily Mail. “So I got the role and I almost didn’t take it because I didn’t want to promote abortion, because my character has an abortion.”

She continued: “But I was like, hopefully they can learn from you know her ways and I can be a positive influence. My mum got pregnant with me when she was 17 and had me when she was 18. She chose. Her parents were never going to let her have an abortion.

“So I came out, so I just want to you know encourage everybody to keep your babies.”

Scherzinger added: “We decided that maybe I could be a voice, that I could shed some light on the subject without being preachy.”
