Reznor says rise of videos and pictures from gigs compels him to keep changing the format of his show
Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has revealed plans for the band’s forthcoming UK arena tour.
Reznor says he will bring a much leaner band than when he was last seen on these shores at the Reading & Leeds Festivals last summer.
“Back then, we had extremely elaborate eight-piece bands for a deep exploration of the new album,” says Reznor. “What we’re doing in Australia and New Zealand now with Queens Of The Stone Age has tended to be much more aggressive. Not as new album heavy. A bit more low-key, with generally only four band members.”
He suggests that part of the reason for his obsession with switching the dynamics of his live set-up is because online sharing is spoiling the freshness for audiences. “When we committed to this cycle of touring, we knew it would be about a year, so we decided that each leg would have its own feel to it,” he explains. “People are able to tune in around the world more than they used to be, whether that be cell phones or live streams, so we wanted to keep more of a unique identity for each phase of the tour.”
The singer also defends his decision to take the show around Britain’s biggest arenas, saying that he wants to include the maximum number of fans possible.
“All of those soulless big arenas that are built mainly for other purposes than music – they all start to look the same,” he says. “So people ask, ‘Why are you playing them?’ And the straight answer is that, if we play 10 club shows in a city, there’s still a chorus of fans pissed off they didn’t get tickets. So, for us, the question becomes one of, ‘How do you take a big place designed for sports shows and find a way to turn it into something intimate and interesting?’ That’s a question we’re constantly trying to deal with. And, I think we’re quite successful at it right now.”
Nine Inch Nails will play:
Birmingham LG Arena
Glasgow Hydro Arena (20)
Cardiff Motorpoint Arena (21)
London The O2 (23)
Nottingham Capital FM Arena (24)
Manchester Phones 4U Arena (25)
