The man behind 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' campaign speaks to NME
The man behind the campaign to score Nirvana a Christmas Number One with ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ has played down his chances of success – along with dismissing the hopes of their X Factor-winning rivals Little Mix.
Jon Morter, who also started 2009’s campaign to make Rage Against The Machine‘s ‘Killing In The Name’ Christmas Number One believes that Military Wives Choir‘s ‘Wherever You Are’ will take the top spot.
I think it’s going be a lot tougher than the Rage Against The Machine campaign, which was bloody hard. There’s a lot more at stake. The Military Wives single has got a very big amount of pre-orders. In complete honesty, I think that’s the one to keep an eye out for, more than the actual X-Factor.
Morter also believes that the television talent show have “had their day” and that “they’ve got maybe one or two series left, at most, until they’ve got to say, ‘How many more ‘talented’ people do we have left in this country?”
When asked about the label’s recent decision to re-release the single to boost its chances, Morter compared the situation to last year’s campaign. “The problem with the Rage campaign is that Sony tried to derail it,” he told NME. “They didn’t, but I found out from a lot of circles that they tried. To have Universal say, ‘Hey this is a good idea’ is great.”
