Amy Winehouse and Cee Lo Green are also in the running

The Military Wives Choir are currently odds on favourites to clinch this year’s official Christmas Number One ahead of Nirvana and The X Factor winners Little Mix.

The collective, who recently featured on BBC 2 show The Choir which sees a group of unrefined singers having their voices polished up, have had their odds slashed to 1/2 for charity single ‘Wherever You Are’, according to Ladbrokes.

Just behind are Little Mix with their Damien Rice cover ‘Cannonball’ with odds of 15/8 while Nirvana remain third favourite for Christmas Number One, with ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit”s odds currently running at 7/1.

A Facebook campaign was launched earlier this year to help the track to the Christmas Number One spot ahead of the winner of this year’s X Factor. The band’s label are also getting behind the campaign by re-releasing the track as a limited edition 7” inch single.

Amy Winehouse is an outside bet with odds of 33/1 while Cee Lo Green is further back at 66/1.

Meanwhile, Damien Rice has responded to fans’ complaints about ‘Cannonball’ being covered by Little Mix on his Twitter page Twitter.com/damienrice.

He explained:

Some people asking about ‘Cannonball’. Once a song is released, anyone can record/release a version without approval, upon certain condition.
