Krist Novoselic dismisses Buzz Osborne’s criticism of ‘Montage of Heck’

'Oh, there goes Buzz again' - Novoselic on the Melvin's frontman

Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic has responded to Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne’s criticism of the Nirvana movie ‘Montage of Heck’ by saying “that’s just Buzz.”

Osborne labeled a large portion of the biopic-style film “total bullshit” back in June 2015.

He said: “First off, people need to understand that 90% of Montage Of Heck is bullshit. Total bullshit. That’s the one thing no one gets about Cobain – he was a master of jerking your chain.”

Novoselic has responded via an interview with Rolling Stone, saying “That’s just Buzz. He’s always been like that, but we love him so we just accept him for that. He’s always had these opinions. Like, ‘Oh, there goes Buzz again.’ You never know what he’s gonna say, but he means well, and he’s a great musician. He’s been a dear friend for a long time. That’s the way it is.”

Novoselic features in the movie, and also recently recorded with the Melvin’s, on their ‘Basses Loaded’ album, which is due in June.

He doesn’t seem to hold any grudges about Osborne’s comments, also saying of his recording with The Melvin’s:

“It’s always fun to play with Buzz and Dale. I brought my accordion and my bass down, and we just played some grungy heavy things. I had these tunes that were super pop, like with major chords and sevenths; those really, poppy things. So we just busted out some music.”

Osborne was a member of Cobain’s first band Fecal Matter, and took issue with a number of specific parts of the movie.

“I know the whole ‘I tried to fuck a fat retard’ story is complete bullshit. Not even an inkling of truth. That’s too good a story to have gone this long without me hearing about it, especially if, as he suggests, the girl’s father freaked out about it at the high school.”

“In that small-town shit-hole, exciting news of that nature would have been common knowledge before the sun set. It never happened. And the trying-to-kill-himself-on-the-train-tracks story is bullshit as well. It never happened either. There it is, though, told in a recording of Kurt’s own voice so it must be true… right? Wrong.”

Osborne also added: “Kurt also told me there was absolutely nothing wrong with his stomach,” he states. “He made it up for sympathy and so he could use it as an excuse to stay loaded. Of course he was vomiting — that’s what people on heroin do, they vomit. It’s called ‘vomiting with a smile on your face’.”
