Holidaymakers in Greece have could face prison if they purchase pirated CDs.

A man was recently arrested and jailed for three months after buying illegal CDs in Athens, BBC news reports.

The man was arrested after buying two CDs last week. The country is said to have a piracy rate amongst the worst in Europe, with ten million pirated CDs sold every year.

International Federation Of The Phonographic Industries (IFPI) spokesperson Ion Stamboulis said: “This is not a symbolic measure. We are determined to prosecute the buyers and we have the support of the authorities.”

He added: “Until now, we were focusing on the sellers, but Greek courts generally hand them light suspended sentences and they resume their trade as soon as they are released.”
