CUBAN STAR PASSES AWAY

Ruben Gonzalez has died...

BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB pianist RUBEN GONZALEZ has died at the age of 84.

The Cuban Music Institute confirmed that Gonzalez died yesterday (December 8) in Havana, but did not provide a cause of death.

One of the leading members of the legendary Cuban music group, Gonzalez was described by guitarist and Buena Vista founder Ry Cooder as “the greatest piano soloist I have ever heard.”

His death follows the passing earlier this year of another key member of the band, Compay Segundo.

As reported by BBC News, Gonzalez enjoyed a musical career spanning over fifty years, starting off in the 1940s at Havana’s Tropicana cabaret.

Although he did not own a piano at the time and suffered from arthritis, the retired pianist headed back into the studio in 1996 and joined the Buena Vista Social Club. He went on to enjoy great critical acclaim from the success of the resulting album and toured the world.
