ANIMALS STAR DAVE ROWBERRY FOUND DEAD

DAVE ROWBERRY, keyboard player with THE ANIMALS, has been found dead in his east LONDON flat.

His body was found in Hackney, by the band’s former bassist Jim Rodford on Friday afternoon (June 6). The group’s drummer John Steel said that the 62-year-old probably died of a heart attack.

“Dave had some heart problems and it was understood he could pop off at any time,” Steel told the BBC.

The Animals’ hits include ‘House of the Rising Sun’ and ‘Got to Get Out of This Place.’ Some members, including Steel and Rowberry, had reformed as Animals and Friends. The band played their last gig in South Shields on Monday (June 2), and were due to play in Poland this weekend.

Steel tried to ring Rowberry on Friday (June 6), but said he panicked when there was no answer.

Rowberry, after performing in Mike Cotton Sound, replaced original Animals keyboard player Alan Price in 1965. Steel said, “He loved playing with the band… He loved the social life of being on the road, eating, drinking, having a good gig and meeting new people.” He added, “It’s great that he did it almost up to the last minute.”
