The TV series winner's debut single looks set to become the fastest selling single in the UK ever...
‘POP IDOL’ winner WILL YOUNG is on course to smash Hear’Say‘s record for the fastest selling debut single in the UK.
Young’s double A-side single ‘Evergreen’/ ‘Anything Is Possible’ has sold just under 400,000 copies since its release yesterday (February 25), according to a chart expert at the Virgin Megastore in London.
Simon Dornan, PR and Events manager for the store said: “Will Young has sold a national total of 385,000 copies on day one of release. When you consider that Hear’Say sold 550,000 in the whole week it’s nothing short of a truly awesome phenomena !”
A spokesperson for rival music chain HMV agreed. He commented: “Yesterday, HMV was predicting that Will Young’s ‘Evergreen’ could sell around 250,000 copies across the counter at all UK music retailers on its day of release, to set a new record for fastest selling debut single.
“This would have been an amazing achievement, particularly when you consider that a Christmas number one single could typically sell this amount over a week.
“However, even this optimistic estimate proved to be too cautious, and it would appear that estimated sales for all retailers combined far exceeded this figure yesterday.”
Both predict that the single could sell in excess of one million copies in the duration of the week. For the final chart positions, click back to NME.COM this Sunday (March 3).
