1965

The 60s proper...

The 60s proper. We’re talking plastic mini skirts, pills, The Pill, open topped sports cars, the King’s Road, dayglo plastic stuff, long hair for men, cropped hair for girls, Chelsea boots, the Chelsea set, op art, pop art, the first stirrings of psychedelia, pot parties, the Permissive Society and ‘The Sound Of Music’ hit the screens. OK, it wasn’t all good…there was also Vietnam, riots in Watts and Harlem, Mary Whitehouse making a stand against ‘filth’ on the telly and ‘The Sound Of Music’ hit the screens…

There were debuts from The Who, The Yardbirds, The Byrds, The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. The NME Poll Winners concert that year was a who’s who of the British Beat Boom – The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Moody Blues, The Mindbenders, The Animals and Herman’s Hermits.

Key event of the year: Dylan goes electric

Gone: Any possibility of stopping rock ‘n’ roll Dylan went electric, the Stones released ‘Satisfaction’, The Beatles just kept on getting bigger and better. The last Mod and rocker got tired of punching each other on Brighton Beach and went off to the pier to drop acid and become hippies together.

There were still people around who thought that this rock ‘n’ roll nonsense was all just a passing fad…
