Justin Bieber has explained why he appeared to break down in tears after performing at the MTV Video Music Awards over the weekend.
The singer performed a medley of his recent singles ‘Where Are Ü Now’ and ‘What Do You Mean’ at the awards show on Sunday night (August 30), and told US TV host Jimmy Fallon that he cried because of the support from the audience.
“It was so overwhelming for me, just the performance,” he said. “I missed some cues so I was a little disappointed at that. Just everyone, the support, I honestly wasn’t expecting [the crowd] to support me in the way that they did. Last time I was at an awards show, I was booed.”
Bieber continued: “I worked so hard at this album, at becoming the man I want to become and stepping into that situation, you just can’t help but feel judged. I wanted to win so badly, I just put everything on the line. That what was so special. It was authentic and real… I was just wanting it so bad.”

The star also admitted that his recent bad behaviour was due to being surrounded by “knuckleheads”, saying, “I just had a bunch of knuckleheads around me. It’s never good to have knuckleheads around. I went through a phase of having to figure it out. You have to figure out what you’re OK with and what you’re not OK with. You have to test the waters, I just happened to be in the spotlight and in front of cameras all the time, and they caught all those moments.”
Bieber also revealed his new album release date, although he almost forgot it altogether. The LP will drop on November 13.
