Comedian Stewart Lee has contributed to a new compilation album featuring covers of folk singer Shirley Collins.

The record will feature artists including Blur’s Graham Coxon, Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo, Bonnie Prince Billy, Johnny Flynn, Trembling Bells and more. ‘Shirley Inspired’ will be released on Record Store Day, April 18 – pre-order it now.

Lee says of his part in the album: “Even though I am a folk fan, I like lots of different music and Shirley’s in the top 10 of all artists for me, irrespective of what they’re supposed to be classified as.”

Lee is also among the contributors to a new book about ‘musical epiphanies’. ‘Epiphanies: Life Changing Encounters With Music’ will collect a number of columns from ‘The Wire’ magazine, dating back to January 1998. Lee’s piece is on the “common ability of great humour and great music to surprise”, while Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, writer Simon Reynolds and Swans’ Michael Gira will also feature in the book, published on April 30.

Stewart Lee has written for NME recently, interviewing Sleaford Mods last year and reviewing single releases in 2010.
