Clara Amfo to take over from Jameela Jamil as host of BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart Show

The 28-year-old presenter will take over in the new year

Radio 1Xtra star Clara Amfo is to take over from Jameela Jamil as the new host of BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart Show.

Amfo, who joined 1Xtra last year as the host of the station’s Weekend Breakfast show, will take over the reins at Radio 1 from January 25, becoming the show’s second solo female presenter since it began in the ’60s as Pick Of The Pops.

In the past, Amfo, 28, has made a series of artist focused documentaries for 1Xtra Live, presented MTV’s The Official UK Top 40, hosted a show on Kiss FM, and was nominated for the ‘Rising Star’ award at the 2012 Sony Radio Awards. “It’s an absolute honour to be taking the reins on a show as iconic as The Official Chart,” the Surrey born presenter said. “It is a dream come true and I can’t wait to announce the UK’s Number 1 for the first time.”

Ben Cooper, Controller, Radio 1 and 1Xtra added: “Clara is a fantastic presenter with huge potential and I know that fans of the Official Chart will love her energy and passion for music. I’m proud that 1Xtra continues to develop young talent for the BBC and the wider industry.”

Jameela Jamil has been hosting the Official Chart Show for two years. Though she will remain part of the Radio 1 lineup of presenters, she said she decided to leave the show to travel and work abroad. “I’ve always put it off due to the wonderful opportunities I have been afforded here, but a recent cancer scare jolted me to just do it, now, while I still can,” she said.

Radio 1 has a weekly audience of 11.50 million and in January 2014 became the first radio station in the world to reach 1 million subscribers on YouTube. In October, the station launched Radio 1 Rescores Drive, a new version of the Ryan Gosling-starring 2011 film with a brand new soundtrack, including Chvrches, Banks, Bring Me The Horizon, Biffy Clyro’s Simon Neil, Jon Hopkins, The 1975, Baauer and SBTRKT.
