Mumford & Sons and James Blake collaborate with Idris Elba on album inspired by Nelson Mandela

'mi Mandela' is the first in a series of albums in which Elba will develop his acting roles through music

Idris Elba has collaborated with Mumford & Sons and James Blake on an album inspired by his recent role as Nelson Mandela in Long Walk To Freedom.

‘mi Mandela’ will be released on November 24 and is preceded by new song ‘You Give Me Love’ featuring Maverick Sabre. The album also has contributions from Mr Hudson, Cody ChestnuTT and George The Poet as well as South African female vocal harmony group Mahotella Queens and solo artist Nothembi Mkhwebane.

Speaking about the album, Elba says: “South Africa has numerous different tribes and each one has a musical expression, and each one has a very unique, different sound style. At the time I had my studio at the apartment I was staying in while I was making ‘Mandela’ – a little keyboard, a laptop – and as an experiment to myself, I vowed to keep making music.”

Mumford & Sons wrote the track ‘Home’ while James Blake provides vocals on ‘Nothembi Jam’. ‘mi Mandela’ was recorded between Johannesburg, London and Mali and is the first in a series of albums on which Elba will develop his acting roles through music. Elba has also starred in films such as Pacific Rim and Prometheus plus TV shows Luther and The Wire.
