The advertisement ranked girls into race-specific categories
The agency responsible for casting the forthcoming NWA biopic has apologised after the firm’s casting call was accused of being racist.
As reported by Gawker, the casting call for “featured extras” was posted via the agency’s Facebook page and used an A, B, C, D scale to group applicants. For Category A , the firm sought woman they described as “the hottest of the hottest” and would consider those who were “black, white, Asian, Hispanic, mid-eastern, or mixed-race”.
After that the scale became more race-specific. Category C was described as “African American girls, medium to light skinned with a weave”, while D also only sought black woman who were, “poor, not in good shape. Medium to dark skin tone”.
Speaking to TMZ, a rep for Sande Alessi Casting described the casting advertisement, that appeared to rank potential applicants by their skin colour, as “an honest mistake”.
The agency have responded to the criticism by asserting they’re looking for women of various skin tones and body types to play the “poor” people and that a grouping system is common when casting different types of people for any project.
The LA-based hip-hop group, who released their debut album ‘Straight Outta Compton’ in 1988, were nominated for induction into the 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but failed to make the final cut.
The upcoming film, also titled Straight Outta Compton, is due for release next year and will feature founding member Ice Cube being played by his own son, O’Shea Jackson Jr.
