One Direction’s ‘Midnight Memories’ tops Billboard 200

UK boy band follow in the footsteps of The Monkees as first three albums reach top spot

One Direction‘s ‘Midnight Memories’ has debuted at the top of the US Billboard 200.

The success of the boyband’s third LP means they’re the first group to hit Number One in the States with their first three albums since 1967.

They follow in the footsteps of The Monkees who scored a Number One with their self-titled debut album in 1966 before reaching the top of the charts three times subsequently in 1967 with ‘More Of The Monkees’, ‘Headquarters’ and ‘Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd’.

‘Midnight Memories’ has sold 546,000 copies in its first week, just slightly more than the group’s second album ‘Take Me Home’, which sold 540,000 in week one.

The high sales means Eminem‘s ‘The Marshall Mathers LP 2’ has been knocked off the top spot, despite the rapper having a 65 per cent sales gain in the week of Thanksgiving promotions.

One Direction’s popularity is echoed at home where ‘Midnight Memories’ tops this week’s UK Official Chart. The quintet are also Number One on the Official Record Store Chart, which reflects sales in the UK’s independent record shops.
