Business Secretary Vince Cable says he didn’t mean to attack One Direction

Politician clarifies comments after branding the band's salaries as "immoral"

Business Secretary Vince Cable has clarified comments he made yesterday about One Direction after saying their salaries were “grossly immoral”.

Cable, the Liberal Democrat MP for Twickenham, was asked if he agreed that it was “mad” that the boyband earned £5 million each in the last year, The Telegraph reports. He is reported to have replied that “much of it is downright insensitive and grossly immoral.”

However, Cable later retracted his comments, claiming that he had misheard the question and was actually referring to the pay of chief executives, rather than the boyband. “I don’t want to attack One Direction; this is one particular group who are apparently very popular and very successful so I have nothing against them,” he said.

One Direction’s debut album ‘Up All Night’ hit the Number One in 16 countries. The band were reported to have made as much as £25 million last year off the back of it.

Last month, the band’s Liam Payne was left red faced when a cab driver switched off their cover of Blondie’s ‘One Way Or Another’. The singer was on his way to a football match in Stamford Bridge with a friend when the cabbie decided he didn’t want to hear the band’s Comic Relief single.
