He also discusses 'controversial' Kanye West performance

Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell has revealed that he’s considering offers to take the renowned US music festival overseas, and said that he welcomes competition from Glastonbury to put on one of the best festivals in the world.

Speaking to NME.COM, the former Jane’s Addiction frontman also revealed that this year he’s adding a new element to the festival, which is set to take place August 1-3 in Chicago’s Grant Park.

Lollapalooza is one of the historically great festivals in this country,” Farrell said. “Over there (in England) they have Glastonbury–it’s actually older than Lollapalooza. I love the competition. I love the idea that OK, you’ve got Glastonbury, let’s see what we can do to make our Lollapalooza fantastic.”

Farrell explained what it would take to bring Lollapalooza overseas. “I’m in negotiations right now with a few other locations, some of them overseas, and we’ll see how it goes,” he said. “I look at Lollapalooza as an incredible party machine and you have to go where you can put on the best party.”

Farrell also revealed that Lollapalooza will feature a new element this year — a shaded “club area” in the middle of Chicago’s Grant Park where people can relax and drink while watching live sets and fashion shows.

“It’ll have booze and seating and an authentic club sound and feel,” Farrell said. “It’s a place where you can get out of the sun, grab a drink and get a taste of dance culture. And I’ll be doing a live electro set there with my Satellite Party posse.”

The three-day festival, which once travelled across the US but currently stays put in Chicago, will feature performances by Radiohead, Rage Against The Machine, Kanye West, Nine Inch Nails, Wilco, The Raconteurs and Gnarls Barkley among others. Farrell said he’s especially excited to see West perform.

“This year Kanye West has had a bit of controversy going on with his live sets, so I’m very much looking forward to seeing him hit the stage and rock the city of Chicago,” he said.
