The Pixies play special fan club show in Hollywood

The iconic rockers performed over 30 songs to the Los Angeles crowd

The Pixies played a special fan club show at the relatively intimate Music Box venue in Hollywood, Los Angeles last night (November 19).

The gig was a ‘secret’ addition to the legendary rock act’s current leg of their Doolittle World Tour, which has seen them take their 1989 second album “off the beaten path” to 19 of the United States’ secondary cities.

Near the beginning of the show bass player Kim Deal announced to the crowd: “We’re doing a lot of songs that we haven’t done in a while – our setlist is like, two pages, so just get comfortable.”

In the end, the Pixies played over 30 songs, including the opening bars of ‘Bone Machine’, which kicked off their two hour set. However the band, who were in a playful mood, failed to finish the track after laughingly messing up its beginning.

The show later saw Joey Santiago playing his guitar part on ‘Vamos’ with his iPhone, simultaneously filming the cheering crowd with the device. “We’ve never played here in this place, have we?” Deal asked the crowd. She went on to introduce the song ‘Bailey’s Walk’ by saying: “This is a b side that we had to learn how to play because it’s so obscure.”

The band also performed their version of Neil Young’s ‘Winterlong’, which they originally recorded for the 1989 album ‘The Bridge: A Tribute To Neil Young’.

The Los Angeles show followed the previous evening’s performance at the Bakersfield Fox Theatre. The Pixies bring their tour to an end with shows tonight at Napa Uptown Theatre (November 20) and tomorrow at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium (21).
