PJ Harvey: ‘There’s nothing more exciting than playing live’ – video

Singer was honoured at Shockwaves NME Awards

PJ Harvey picked up the Teenage Cancer Trust Outstanding Contribution To Music Award at last night’s (February 23) Shockwaves NME Awards ceremony – and gave a video interview to NME.

The singer also played live at the O2 Academy Brixton event, explaining how gigging was the most exciting part of being a musician for her.

“All the different aspects of it [making music] I enjoy,” she said. “They’re all quite seperate from each other. When I’m writing there’s nothing more satisfying than when you know yo’ve worked a song through to the best it can be. That can take quite a long time.”

She added: “The final part of it is playing live in front of peope and that’s where songs come to be in the moment, and there’s nothing more exciting than being in the moment then.”

She also said that NME has been “a constant in my life, I can remember my mother and father reading it when I was little, so it’s always been there”.

Harvey performed recent single ‘The Words That Maketh Murder’ and her 1995 single ‘Down By The Water’ at the bash.
