Filmmakers working on a documentary featuring members of Primal Scream, The Flaming Lips, The Smashing Pumpkins and The Cure are appealing to shoegaze fans to help fund its release.

‘Beautiful Noise’, which trails the enduring influence of ’80s and ’90s guitar bands including The Jesus And The Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and the Cocteau Twins, is already eight years in the making and features over 50 interviews with influential bands. It explores the period when musicians mixed guitar noise into conventional pop song structures using a sea of effects pedals.

In a video you can watch above, Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie hails his one-time bandmate, The Jesus And The Mary Chain’s guitarist William Reid.

He says:

Just to listen to William’s guitar every night, what he was doing was freeform, it was different every single night on every song. He had his basic riffs but he was a freeform guitar player, he was like a free jazz guitar player and he would hate me saying that. But he had the freedom, the exploration and imagination of somebody like John Coltrane

Other bands and artists featured in the film include Ride, Slowdive, Lush, Swervedriver, The Telescopes, The Boo Radleys, Trent Reznor and Billy Corgan. The project is in its final stages and the aim is for a worldwide release, but the filmmakers need to raise $75,000 (£46,500) to pay for limited run licensing and costs to enable them to distribute to film festivals and on DVD/Blu-ray.
