Singer plays three-hour show at 500-capacity venue
Prince played an intimate secret show in New York last night (August 26) that ended at 6am.
As Consequence Of Sound reports, the Purple One performed at the City Winery, a 500-capacity venue, with a set that started at 3am and included 32 songs and two encores. He was joined by both his hew backing band 3rdEyeGirl and his old group The New Power Generation, who had been hosting a week-long residency at the venue.
Other performers at the show included Cee Lo Green, Larry Graham, Shelby J and Doug E Fresh. Songs included in Prince’s set included ‘1999’, ‘Raspberry Beret’, ‘What Have You Done For Me Lately’ and ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’.
Earlier this month, Prince unveiled a new track titled ‘Groovy Potential’. He has been releasing a slew of material online in recent months via his 3rdEyeGirl website. Earlier this year, the singer and his new band embarked on a theatre tour of North America, with gigs in Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Las Vegas, San Diego, Anaheim and Denver. They played two shows a night at most venues.
Prince will also appear on Janelle Monáe’s forthcoming album ‘The Electric Lady’, which is released in September. The Purple One will appear on a track named ‘Givin Em What They Love’. Monáe has said of Prince: “We are great friends, and he is a mentor to us, to me. It’s a beautiful thing to have a friend – someone who cares about your career, and wants to see you go far and to push boundaries and shake up the world – give whatever they possibly can to the cause.”
