Prince gives new single away for free

Track will be available to mobile phone users

Prince has announced he will give the first track from his upcoming album ‘Planet Earth’ away for free to mobile phone users.

The singer’s new single ‘Guitar’ became downloadable on Thursday (May 31) to Verizon Wireless phones to customers who use the service provider’s new V Cast song ID feature, which identifies songs for listeners who hold their phone next to a speaker.

Fans who download the free ID feature can then go to sites such as myspace to play the video holding the phone close by.

The phone will then provide information about the song and an option to download it wirelessly on the spot.

The announcement follows in the wake of contemporaries such as David Bowie, who became involved with a Nokia phone launch last year.

Verizon Wireless has even worked with musicians in the past such as the Fugees.

‘Planet Earth’ will be released in July.
