Randy Newman: ‘I’d like to do an EDM record’

Singer-songwriter reveals surprise interest in "irresistible" electronic music

Randy Newman has said that he wants to make an EDM album.

The singer-songwriter, best known in recent years for scoring films such as Toy Story and other Pixar titles, spoke to Rolling Stone about his career ahead of receiving the Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence award from PEN New England next month (June).

Asked if there was any musical genres he is not a fan of, Newman took the opportunity to express an interest in following in the path of artists such as David Guetta and Calvin Harris. “I’d like to do an EDM record – get some Swedish guy, have him do 700 dates ‘til he breaks, then get another one. I could write it. I think I could. Some of that’s kind of irresistible,” he says.

Hip-Hop is also something on Newman’s agenda, with the singer-songwriter stating: “You know, Kanye West is a hell of a lyricist. The music’s great, too.”

Randy Newman has won 20 Oscars in his career. The last film he scored was Monsters University in 2013.
