REEF ARE TOP OF THE CLASS

nme.com can also reveal that the group will be doing a tour of schools at the end of the month...

Reef played a secret show at OXFORD‘s ZODIAC club last night (June 21) as warm-up for their forthcoming Glastonbury show and series of live dates around the country, nme.com can reveal.

It precedes a performance at Bex Rock Festival in Switerland on Friday (June 23) and their late afternoon appearance on Glastonbury‘s main stage on Saturday (June 24).

Opening with a brand new track ‘Superhero’ the band then choose to focus on material from their first three albums. Only three new songs were aired. Alongside ‘Superhero’ were ‘Set The Record Straight’ and ‘Getaway’ – three of the four they previewed at last weeks invitation-only London gig (June 15).

Of the three, it was new album title track ‘Getaway’ that was most warmly received, marking as it does a return to the full-on Faces-meets –Black Crowes stompalongs that brought Reef to wide attention with 1997’s ‘Glow’.

Frontman Gary Stringer seemed to revel in the limited-capacity, sweaty club and the band, for the most part, looked relaxed. Though there was little indication of quite how the new songs will translate live Reef did have some of the old swagger back.

The full set list for Oxford was: ‘Superhero’, ‘Place Your Hands’, ‘Who You Are’, ‘Set The Record Straight’, ‘Come Back Brighter’, ‘I Would Have Left You’, ‘I’ve Got Something To Say’, ‘Sweety’, ‘Good Feeling’, ‘Getaway’, ‘Summers In Bloom’, ‘Lately Stomping’, ‘Speak Lark’, ‘Yer Old’, ‘Trashy’, ‘Back At My Place’, ‘Naked’, ‘New Bird’ and ‘Wake’.
