Singer also tells NME about the making of her new album 'What We Saw From The Cheap Seats'
Regina Spektor has spoken about her new album ‘What We Saw From The Cheap Seats’ and has revealed why she opted to re-record ‘Don’t Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas)’ for the album.
‘Don’t Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas)’ is the second single to be taken from ‘What We Saw From The Cheap Seats’, with the album’s lead-off single ‘All The Rowboats’ previously made available online. The album will be released on May 12.
Speaking to NME, the singer responded to a question about why she had chosen to re-record ‘Don’t Leave Me (Ne Me Quitter Pas)’, which was previously released on her 2002 album ‘Songs’, by saying: “The thing with ‘Songs’ is, even though it’s a record and I’m really grateful that I got to record it, all the tracks that are on there are just one take. It’s basically a live record without an audience.”
She continued: “There’s a lot of songs that I’ve played live and I never got to record in the way I feel like they deserve to be. These songs come back because they’ve been on a really sparse record, I feel like I need to produce them properly and I can’t rest until that’s done.”
The singer also spoke about the recording of ‘What We Saw From The Cheap Seats’ and how much she had enjoyed working with producer Mike Elizondo.
Asked when she recorded the album, she replied: “The music’s been done for a while. I recorded it in the summer. I went out to Los Angeles in July and played a whole bunch of songs for Mike, both new and old. I then I came back and we got going really fast and the whole record was done in about six weeks.”
Then asked about what it was like to work with Elizondo, she replied: “It was wonderful. I loved working with him, he’s so talented and yet so chilled, which is not a quality I possess. It’s amazing to see somebody be so talented and not neurotic at all. He’s so amazing at finding all kinds of sounds.”
Regina Spektor will play two UK shows in July. She will first play London’s Royal Albert Hall on July 2, before moving onto Manchester’s O2 Apollo on July 4. You can watch the video for ‘All The Rowboats’ by scrolling down to the bottom of the page and clicking.
